Handcrafted Bells

The Camel is known as 'The Ship of the Desert'. It is almost an exclusive means of transportation across the deserts of eastern countries like India. Unlike other animals, a Camel can continuously travel for days without drinking a drop of water. The sweet melodious sounds of twinkling bells around their neck help the Camel keep pace while the caravan continues the long journey through the burning hot desert. The bells used in our line of SunChimes adapt the sweet sounds of the same 'Camel Bells' into a more decorative item.

The bells we use in our SunChimes are intricately hand-crafted in a small village in Northern India. They are made by a local family out of recycled materials found in and near their village.

The bells are shaped by hand from recycled tin cans. The family gathers specific cans from local businesses, knowing which cans will produce the various tones their different sized and shaped bells make. After cleaning and then cutting the tin cans to the size and shape they need, they are formed into the bell shapes and capped with another piece of recycled tin. To finish the bells with the antiqued look they display, they use brass and copper shavings, waste metals from a local factory. These metals are heated, sprinkled over burlap and then the bells are rolled in the burlap and hot metal to affix the metal mix to the tin.
